아이구, 정신 사나워라… 처음부터 끝까지 줄기차게 '메가폰'을 달고 사는군요. 잘 들리지도 않게 말야. 듣기 연습하라고 일부러 만든 광고 아녀?

이 광고는 도대체 뭘 팔자는 걸까요? 확성기로 왕왕 떠들어대는 걸 보면, 이렇게 요란하게 살지 말고 전화로 속삭이자는 전화요금 할인 서비스 광고 같기도 하고, 마지막에 번호만 턱 제시하는 걸 보면 일종의 700 서비스인 것 같기도 하고… 힌트는 마지막 shot에 있습니다. 메가폰과 함께 놓인 병에 Tango라는 label이 붙어서 뱅뱅 돌아가고 있네요. 탱고는 바로 그 음료의 brand name이랍니다.

근데 메가폰이랑 음료랑 뭔 상관이 있지? 제품 얘기는 한번도 안 나왔는데… 네, 이 광고의 목표는 TV audiences의 호기심을 유발하여 아래 나와있는 전화번호로 전화를 걸게끔 유도하는 데 있답니다. 영국의 트라이앵글이라는 광고대행사에서 집행하여 대성공을 거둔 프로모션의 하나인데, 요지는 탱고사로 전화를 걸어라, 그러면 배터리가 장착된 확성기를 하나씩 준다, 전화요금은 2.99 파운드인데, 그 안에 확성기 우송료랑 제품값이 다 포함되어 있다, 확성기를 받으면 이 광고의 Jim처럼 탱고 안 마시는 사람을 까발겨라, 심심할 때는 그냥 확성기에 대고 외치기도 하려무나, Jim은 저렇게 외치고 다니면서부터 생활이 재미있어졌다고 하지 않냐, 당신도 즐겨라, 탱고 메가폰과 함께 '까발김'의 매력을!!! 이랍니다. 아래 글을 읽어보시면 grab a picture 하실 수 있을 겁니다.

Telescope managed the communications for a Tango promotion, devised by Triangle. The three main objectives were to recruit new Tango drinkers, increase purchases by regular customers and drive brand equity through consumer involvement.

The creative concept was that Tango drinkers should 'out' non-Tango drinkers by shouting at them through a Tango megaphone. These could be obtained by calling a premium automated phone line and providing personal details.

The two-minute calls cost up to ￡2.99, which covered the delivery and manufacturing costs of a battery-operated Tango megaphone.

The activity was promoted using posters and TV, as well as at point of purchase and on-pack. The promotion runs until the end of the year and has generated more than 230,000 calls. At its peak, market share rose from 8.4% to 13.2%.

그런데 아이러니하게도 이 광고는 방영금지 처분을 당했답니다. 사람들에게 남의 치부를 들춰내는 일을 부추긴다(encourage bullying)고요. 반짝 아이디어로 호기심을 자극하는 데는 성공했지만, side effect가 나타날 수도 있다는 건 염두에 두지 못했나 봅니다. 아니면 방영금지를 당했다는 사실도 훌륭한 publicity '꺼리'가 될 수 있으니까…

탱고가 정확히 어떤 음료인지는 안 마셔봐서 모르겠는데, 사이트엘 들어가보면 아주 재미있습니다. 뿔 달린 빨강도깨비 비슷한 애가 등장하여 각종 게임을 소개하고 이런저런 지시를 하는데, '참회'라는 제목의 게임도 있네요. 탱고 안 마시는 사람들이 있다. 이들은 사악한 행동을 하는 셈이다. 그러니 이들을 탱고 섬에다 가둬놓고 고생을 시켜서 참회하게 만들재나 뭐래나… 참 엽기가 따로 없어…

아무튼 '탱고 메가폰' 시리즈는 radical한 방식으로 시청자들의 관심 유발에 성공했고, market share도 상당히 끌어올린 성공적 캠페인의 하나랍니다. 캠페인이 지니는 윤리적 차원의 문제는 늘 상대적인 거니까 뭐라 왈가왈부하지는 못하겠네요. 침대는 가구가 아니라니께… 그래서 요즘은 잠이 보약이라니깐! 그럼 잠 한 첩 짓는 데는 월마래유???

완전히 새로운 개념의 신용카드입니다.

아메리칸 익스프레스, 1850년에 영업을 개시한 credit card 업계의 기린아입니다. 각종 카드 서비스의 선구자적 역할을 훌륭히 수행해 왔지요. David Ogilvy가 60, 70년대에 만들었던 아멕스 광고는 '명작' 시리즈로 광고사에 길이 남을 겁니다. 아이디어는 별다른 게 아니었고, worldwide-renowned celebrities를 등장시켜 '누구누구, 몇 년도부터 아멕스 회원이었습니다'라고 밝히는 것이었죠. 워낙 유명한 인물들이 등장하니까 절로 credibility가 형성되었습니다. 빅 모델 광고의 효시라고나 할까…

그리고는 유명 인사들의 아멕스에 얽힌 잔잔한 일화를 곁다리로 소개하는 시리즈가 집행되었는데, 그것도 상당한 감동을 불러일으켰습니다. 홀로 떠난 여행길에 지갑을 잃어버려서 오도가도 못하는 난감한 처지였다, 혹시나 해서 아멕스 서비스에 전화를 했더니 하룻밤 만에 재발급을 해주더라, 너무너무 고마워서 눈물이 나왔는데 얼른 훔치고 줄기차게 신나게 놀다 왔다더라는 등의 얘기지요.

지금은 누구나 지갑에 카드 한 두 장씩은 넣고 다니는 a card is a must 시대가 되었지만, 십여 년 전만 해도 '카드'라는 게 상당한 power를 지녔지요. 특히 '골드' 카드는 신분을 상징하는 역할을 하기도 했으니, 우습지도 않았습니다. 우리나라는 지나치게 골드카드 회원이 많다고 그러더군요. 그래서 카드 부정이나 신용 불량도 많이 생기고요. 안 좋은 건 꼭 gold medal 감이라니깐…

카드가 귀했던 시절, 그 시절에 로마시대 장군의 옆모습이 연한 녹색으로 새겨진 아메리칸 익스프레스를 척 내보이면 괜히 있어보였죠. 아멕스 카드는 아무나 발급받을 수 있는 게 아녀!라는 은근한 자기 과시의 수단이기도 했고요. 정말 prestige의 대명사, 아메리칸 익스프레스였는데, 요즘은 사정이 완전히 달라졌습니다. 누구 아는 사람이 찾아오죠, 그리고는 제발 카드발급 신청서만 작성해 달라, 카드 날아오면 안 쓰고 가위로 썩둑 잘라버리면 돈 한푼 안 내도 되니까 아무 염려말고, 그래서 작성한 카드만도 숱할 걸요… 카드 재료도 다 수입품이라는데, 가뜩이나 어려운 나라 형편에 웬 낭비? 우리 모두 지갑에는 꼭 필요한 카드 한 장 혹은 두 장씩만 넣고 다닙시다. 지갑 열어서 좌라락 카드 펼치는 모양새가 오히려, 난 financing을 제대로 못 하는 사람이야, 오죽하면 이렇게 많은 카드를 가지고 있어야 그나마 버티겠니?라는 엉뚱한 생각까지 들게 만드니까요. 오옷, 또 헛소리다…

아멕스에서 새로 나온 Blue Card는 소규모 자영업자나 개인, 돈이 별로 많지 않은 학생들이 유용하게 쓸 수 있는 카드랍니다. 다른 카드랑 비교할 때 서비스 내용이야 거기서 거기겠지만, 광고에서 보시는 것처럼 늘였다, 줄였다, 비틀었다, 휘었다, 상당히 flexible, elastic한 서비스가 많은가 보더군요. 서비스에 대한 자세한 사항은 사이트로 직접 방문하시면 좋겠네요. 혹 해서 내친 김에 카드 하나 만들지는 마시고요.

이 광고는 도대체 뭘 얘기하려는 걸까요? 복면을 쓴 괴한들이 어떤 부잣집 거실을 망원경으로 탐색하고 있습니다. 그 집에서는 성룡이 노트북 컴퓨터로 뭔가를 검색중이네요. TD Waterhouse 홈페이지에 접속하여 분석가들이 수집해 놓은 정보 코너로 들어가려 합니다. 순간 두런거리는 소리에 얘들아, 니들 집 잘못 찾었어, 우리는 옆집여!라고 친절히 얘기를 해주지만, 복면 쓴 애들은 아랑곳하지 않고 달려듭니다. 한바탕 난리 부르스를 춘 다음에 어떤 방으로 들어가는데, 어머나, Jackie Chan 포스터가 턱 하니 오합지졸들을 노려보고 있네그려, 으악, 잘못 짚었다, 하필이면 성룡이네 집이람! 하면서 달아나는 범인들, 에라 이거라도 던지자꾸나 하면서 노트북을 집어드는데, 으악, 그것만은 안돼, 내 가장 소중한 투자정보원이란 말야! 떨어지려는 노트북을 날렵하게 나꿔채 submit 단추를 누르는 성룡. 그리고는 TD Waterhouse는 NYSE에 등록되었다는 멘트 한마디. 참 허망합니다.

성룡도 TD Waterhouse를 통해 투자를 한다는 걸 얘기하고 싶었나? 성룡만큼 머리 나쁜(?) 애도 투자할 수 있을 만큼 online trading이 쉽다는 얘기를 하고자 했나? 성룡처럼 유명한 celebrities는 죄다 알게 모르게 TD Waterhouse를 통해 돈을 번다는 얘기가 main message인가???

아무튼 성룡이 등장하길래 흥미를 가지고 보긴 했지만, 영 실체가 손에 안 잡히는 광고입니다. 그냥 유명인을 모델로 출연시켜 화제만 유발하려고 한 건가? 아니면 성룡을 기용하여 시리즈로 집행한 광고들 가운데 하나인가? (그렇지는 않은 것 같죠…) 아무튼 그다지 높은 점수를 주고 싶지는 않은 광고입니다.

TD Waterhouse는 온라인으로 각종 금융 서비스를 제공하는 거대 금융 그룹이랍니다. 뉴욕증시에 상장될 정도면 그 size나 performance가 상당하겠지요. 이 회사의 모토는 '얼마나 쉽냐!'라네요. 과연 얼마나 쉽게 서비스를 제공하는지 company profile을 훑어보십시오. 홈페이지에도 접속해 보시고요. 좀 느리더군요.

Jackie Chan (Biography)

One the most popular film personalities in the world, Jackie Chan came from a poverty-stricken Hong Kong family -- so poor, claims Chan, that he was almost sold in infancy to a wealthy British couple. As it turned out, Chan became his family's sole support. Enrolled in the Chinese Opera Research Institute at the age of seven, he spent the next decade in rigorous training for a career with the Peking Opera, excelling in martial arts and acrobatics.

Billed as Cheng Lung, Chan entered films in his mid-teens, appearing in twenty-five productions before his twentieth birthday. Starting out as a stunt man, Chan was promoted to stardom as the potential successor to the late Bruce Lee. In his earliest starring films, he was cast as a stone-cold serious type, determined to avenge Lee's death. Only when he began playing for laughs did Chan truly attain full celebrity status. Frequently referred to as the Buster Keaton of kung-fu, Chan's outlook on life is a lot more optimistic than Keaton's, but in his tireless devotion to the most elaborate of sight gags and the most awe-inspiring of stunts (many of which have nearly cost him his life), Chan is Keaton incarnate.

From 1978's The Young Master onward, Chan has usually been his own director and screenwriter. In 2000 Chan had another success on his hands with Shanghai Noon, a comedy western in which he starred as an Imperial Guard dispatched to the American West to rescue the kidnapped daughter (Lucy Liu) of the Chinese Emperor.

이런 식의 approach는 광고에서 흔하게 사용되었습니다. 화면을 쩍!반으로 가릅니다. 한쪽은 남자, 한쪽은 여자가 등장해서 서로의 감정상태를 행동으로 보여주죠. 아니면 둘이 비슷한 대사를 떠들어대기도 하고요. 그러다가 우연찮게 똑같은 행동을 하는 (대개 똑같은 제품을 선택하지요. 광고니까!) 상황이 연출되면서 씨익 미소를 짓는 게 이런 광고의 typical style입니다.

CK1도 크게 다르지는 않습니다. 척 보니까 괜찮은 남자구만, 오묘괴묘하게도 여자한테 딱지를 맞았나 봅니다. 그러면서 서로가 흥! 토라져서 각자 집으로 돌아와 혼잣말을 하는데, 능구렁이 같은 짜석, 여자 마음을 송두리째 꿰뚫고 있구만요. 사랑은 과연 남자의 대사대로 저런 procedure를 거쳐 완성되는 걸까요? 남성과 여성 모두에게 어울리는 색깔과 향의 캘빈 클라인 1 향수… '남녀공용'이라는 제품의 컨셉트를 무난하게 dramatize한 광고라는 생각이 듭니다. 뭐 특출난 건 없는 것 같죠?

영어를 공부하는 입장에서, 남자의 대사 중에 여자의 마음이 변해가는 과정을 묘사하는 표현은 익혀두는 게 좋겠네요. 의미심장한 단어들이 많이 등장하니까요. That's how it starts. Malign turns to indifference, which turns to toleration, which turns to familiarity, which turns to love. What a reasonable facsimile! 팩시밀리를 보내면 똑같은 모양이 복사되어 나오지요. 그녀의 심리상태도 당연히(reasonable하게) 그의 사랑방정식을 따라간다는 확신일 텐데… 그녀가 전혀 다른 reaction을 보여주었으면 더 creative하지 않았을까? 하긴 그럼 하나(1)로 합쳐지는 남과 여라는 concept와 반대로 가는 것이겠구나…

여러분은 어떤 향수를 쓰십니까? 네, 향수 알레르기가 있으시다고요? 으흠… 너무 진하게 뿌려서 골머리 지끈지끈하게 만들지만 않는다면, 향수도 훌륭한 자기연출 수단이 될 겁니다. 사람의 인상을 결정하는 데는 여러 가지 요소가 작용을 하지만, 냄새만큼 강하고 한편으로 아련하게 기억을 일깨우는 것도 없다고 그러더군요. 아, 그녀에게서는 혹은 그에게서는 늘 초여름 새벽 들판의 풀향기가 풍겼어… 근데 이런 얘기 하는 사람은 한번이라도 초여름 새벽 들판에 나가보기나 했을까나?

인터넷을 뒤져보니 '수민'이라는 아가씨가 좋아하는 향수들의 인기순위를 매겨놓았네요. 나에겐 어떤 향이 어울릴지 스윽 훑어보시고 한번쯤 이 봄의 유혹에 빠져보는 것도, 아니면 봄을 유혹하는 것도 괜찮을 듯…

시원, 달콤. CK 1과 CK be는 비슷한 향기 같지만 CK 1은 부담없고 가볍고 편안함을 기본으로 하는 향이며, Ck be는 자유로운 사고를 추구하는 젊은이들의 사고방식을 담은 향수. 여성적이지도 남성적이지도 않은 중성 느낌의 유니섹스 향이 웬지 괜찮아 보인다.

뭐 특출난 제품이 아니라 흔하디 흔한 tablet형 '껌' 광고입니다만, 나름대로 아이디어나 메시지가 정직하고 straightforward해서 좋습니다. 상큼한 공기가 입안 가득 굽이치라는 의미에서 Airwaves라는 이름을 붙였겠지요. brand name 자체가 그렇다 보니까 광고의 소재도 자연스럽게 acrobatic flight가 등장했을 겁니다. 모든 게 정해진 수순을 밟았다는, 매뉴얼에 충실하게 만들어졌다는 느낌이 듭니다. 그럼 재미가 없어지나? 그래도 제품광고 하면서 중뿔난 아이디어랍시고 이상야릇한 화면에, 엽기적인 행동에, 도대체 뭔 소리를 하는지 알아듣지도 느끼지도 못하게 만드는 '예술' 광고들보다는 훨씬 낫습니다.

광고에서처럼 '뱅기'들이 뱅글뱅글, 피융피융, 휘리리릭 재주를 부리는 air show가 해마다 펼쳐지는데, 해외 토픽 같은 데 보면 꼭 70세 노익장이니 80세 청춘이니 하면서 젊음을 과시하는 사람들이 등장합니다. 물론 지나치게 재주를 부리려다가 사고를 당하는 경우도 흔하고요…

이 광고의 '화면발'은 상당히 촌스럽습니다. 아마 인물만 세트에서 찍고, 비행기가 somersault 하는 건 자료필름을 갖다 쓴 거 같죠? 그래도 맨날 찧고 까불고 편집기계로 장난만 치는 일반적인 껌 광고보다는 여러 모로 공이 많이 들어갔네요. safety belt까지 단단히 매잖아요… 별 중요치 않은 것 같지만, 요 장면이 play a significant role 한다고 생각합니다. 에어웨이브는 강렬한, 짜릿한 경험을 가능케 한다, 그러니 단단히 준비하여라!는 메시지를 안전띠 찰칵 잠그는 것으로 상징을 한 거지요. 아니면 얘네도 심의규정이 워낙 까다로워서, 모든 vehicle에는 seat belt 착용이 의무라는 걸 보여주려고 그랬나?

이 광고의 narrator 목소리를 듣고 있으면 60, 70년대 성우들의 연기가 생각나지 않으세요? 아리따운 20대 여자모델에 40대 구수한 목소리의 아저씨가 공중에서 rendezvous를 벌이다니… 광고 제작자들도 메시지를 정직하게 전달해서 좋긴 한데 너무 틀에 박혀 재미가 없다고 느낀 걸까요? 그래서 세련된 목소리의 여자 성우 대신, 구수함이 묻어나는 아저씨 성우한테 약간 '오바'하는 멘트를 시켰는지도 모르겠네요.

뤼글리는 대략 이런 회사라네요. 껌 하나로 세계를 제패한…

The Story of Chewing Gum

People have enjoyed chewing gum-like substances in many lands and from very early times. Some of these materials were thickened resin and latex from certain kinds of trees. Others were various sweet grasses, leaves, grains and waxes.

For centuries the ancient Greeks chewed mastic gum (or mastiche pronounced "mas-tee-ka"). This is the resin obtained from the bark of the mastic tree, a shrub-like tree found mainly in Greece and Turkey. Grecian women especially favored chewing mastic gum to clean their teeth and sweeten their breath.

From the Indians of New England, the American colonists learned to chew the gum-like resin that formed on spruce trees when the bark was cut. Lumps of spruce gum were sold in the eastern United States during the early 1800s, making it the first commercial chewing gum in this country. In about 1850, sweetened paraffin wax became popular and eventually exceeded spruce gum in popularity.
Modern chewing gum had its beginning in the late 1860s when chicle was brought to the United States and tried as a chewing gum ingredient. Chicle comes from the milky juice (latex) of the sapodilla tree, which grows in the tropical rain forests of Central America. This tree is found mainly in those parts of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize that lie within the Yucatan Peninsula.

Gum made with chicle and similar latexes soon won favor over spruce gum and paraffin gum. It made possible a smooth, springy, satisfying chew that the others lacked, and it held flavors longer and better. By the early 1900s, with improved methods of manufacturing, packaging and marketing, modern chewing gum was well on its way to its current popularity.

적절한 timing이라고 할 수 있겠죠? 불을 끄려면 확실하게 꺼주는 게 시간과 돈과 노력을 절감하는 best course일 테니까요. 화이어스톤 입장에서 괜히 미적거렸다가는 소비자 불신만 가중시키는 결과를 빚고 말았을 겁니다. 존 램피 Chief Executive Officer는 연기도 그럭저럭 잘 하누만요. 생긴 건 참으로 '회장스럽지' 않은데 말입니다…

우리나라에서도 한때 각종 사장님, 회장님들이 광고 모델로 득세한 적이 있습니다. 수천, 수억씩 주고 비싼 모델 부르는 것보다 '진솔한' 메시지 전달이라는 면에서 훨씬 효과적이었지요. 하지만 모모 회사 사장님 출연한 광고가 한번 효과를 봤다니까, 기다렸다는 듯이 너도 나도 우르르 카메라 앞으로 몰려든 사장, 회장, 이사장, 김사장, 배사장… 그러면 이미 배는 물건너간 거지요. 어쨌든 모델비는 절약했겠네요.

어떤 조직에서든 높은 자리에 있는 사람은 외로운 법입니다. 힘겨운 결정을 내려야 할 때도 많고, 사람들로부터 소외되고, 알랑거리며 비위나 맞추는 가증스런 인간들만 눈에 띄고, 밥 먹으러 갈 때 기꺼운 마음으로 같이 가자는 사람도 없고… 2000년 10월 12일자 USA Today에는 신임 램피 회장의 힘겨운 과제가 이렇게 정리되어 있습니다. 이들 가운데 그는 어느 정도나 해결하고 있을까요?

* Restore confidence in the Firestone brand.
Retailers like Lampe's chances. ''This is the greatest decision they could make, not only for brand, but for consumers and employees of the company. Management experts are skeptical. ''It's almost too late for Firestone. The only hope is to break out of the pattern that got them into this, and in the midst of a crisis, it's not likely you can break out of it,'' says Ian Mitroff, president of Comprehensive Crisis Management and author of just-published Managing Crises Before They Happen.

* Reform the company culture that ignored warning signs of faulty tires.
''We are going through very difficult times, and things are not the same, and I think we must be a different company,'' Lampe told USA TODAY.

''Tell me what's going to be different about a person they pick from within the culture,'' Mitroff says, citing Lampe's lifelong employment at Firestone.

* Break through a business culture that concentrates power in the hands of Japanese executives.
''Will he be a real CEO? Will he have autonomy?'' asks Jeffrey Christian of Christian & Timbers, which recruits executives to fix troubled firms. ''It's pretty groundbreaking if he's going to be a real CEO.''

광고 카피 마지막이 아주 인상적입니다. Firestone's commitment to safety doesn't end when you leave the store. It begins. 그렇죠. 타이어라는 게 가게에서 사는 데까지는 아무런 문제가 없는 제품입니다. 중요한 건 차에 매달고 달렸을 때 얼마나 안전하고, 얼마나 효과적으로 주행을 도와주느냐는 거지요. 카피라이터는 타이어의 본질을 아주 잘 꿰뚫고 있습니다. 차라리 이 아이디어를 십분 활용하여 광고 전체를 끌어갔더라면 훨씬 힘과 믿음이 느껴지지 않았을까요?

1. 머리

I feel dizzy.(어지러워요.)

2. 목(NECK)

보통 목을 말할 때는 목구멍(throat)을 말하는데 편도선(tonsil)관는 다르게 표현한다. throat는 목구멍 즉 식도를 말하고 편도선(tonsil)은 사람의 입속 양쪽구석에 하나씩 있는 평평하고타원형인 임파선(lymphatic gland)을 말한다.

가래(phlegm,sputum)는 침(saliva)과는 성질이 다른데 묽은가래는 thin sputum, 된가래는 thick sputum, 피석인 가래는 bloody phlegm로 표현한다.

3. 가슴( Chest )

가슴(breast,chest,bosom,bust[여자])에는 여러 가지의 영어단어가 사용되는데 breast는 특히 가슴의 앞쪽유방을 가리키며 그러나 부인에게는 bosom을 사용하는 편이 좋다. chest는 가슴 전체를 말하며 heart는 추상적인 의미의 가슴-마음을 말한다.

I have pain in the chest.(가슴이 아파요.)
My breast are tender(가슴이 아파요.)
There is a sudden sharp pain in my chest. (가슴에 갑작스러운 예리한 통증이 있읍니다.)

4. 허리,등(Back)

허리의 영어표현은 back,lower back,waist,small of the back등으로 표현하고, 등은 back으로 표현하면 된다.

My back hurts sometimes.(때때로 등이 아픕니다.)
I have pulling pain in my back.(등이 당겨지는 통증이 있습니다.)
When I tried to lift a heavy thing, I felt my back snap. (무거운 것을 들어 올릴려고할 때 등이 부러지는 것 같았습니다.)
My back iches.(등이 가렵습니다.)
I have a rash on my back.(등에 발진이 생겼습니다.)
I have stubborn boil on my back.(등에 딱딱한 종기가 생겼습니다.)
